Raw dried Irish sea moss on a ceramic dish beside a glass jar of sea moss gel

Sea Moss Capsules vs Gel: Which One Is Worth Your Money?

Sea moss gel is raw Chondrus crispus blended with water. Sea moss capsules are the same algae dried and concentrated into a powder. Same plant, two formats that behave completely differently once they are in your kitchen.

The short answer

Gel Capsules
Storage Refrigerated, roughly 2–4 weeks Cupboard, shelf-stable
Taste Sea-like; most people hide it in smoothies None
Dose A spoonful — varies by batch and water content Stated in milligrams, identical daily
Travel No Yes
Other uses Thickener in cooking, face masks Swallowing, that is it

Gel is mostly water — and that is the whole story

To make gel, dried sea moss is soaked, then blended with water until it sets. What you are buying, and refrigerating, is largely water with algae suspended in it.

That has two consequences. It spoils — no preservatives, high moisture, so a jar lasts a few weeks in the fridge and then has to go. And the dose drifts: how much actual sea moss sits in a tablespoon depends on how much water went into that batch, which is why gel jars rarely state milligrams of anything.

Capsules solve both by removing the water. What is left is concentrated, shelf-stable, and printable on a label.

Where gel genuinely wins

It is cheaper per serving, especially homemade. It works as a thickener in smoothies and soups, which capsules obviously cannot do. And if you like the ritual — making it, spooning it, seeing the raw thing — that matters, because a supplement you enjoy taking is one you keep taking.

If you go the gel route, keep it refrigerated, make small batches, and throw it out at the first sour smell or colour change.

Where capsules win

Consistency, mostly. Two capsules is two capsules whether it is Tuesday at home or a Thursday in a hotel. Nothing spoils, nothing needs a fridge, and there is no taste to negotiate with at 7am.

Capsules also let a formula include things gel cannot carry sensibly — which brings us to the traditional pairing.

The traditional three

Sea moss is classically taken with bladderwrack and burdock root. That is how our Sea Moss is built: 500 mg organic Irish moss, 500 mg organic bladderwrack, 400 mg organic burdock root, plus 5 mg BioPerine® black pepper extract for absorption. Two capsules daily, 20–30 minutes before a meal, in a vegan pullulan capsule. Sixty capsules — a month.

The iodine question, answered honestly

Sea moss and bladderwrack are both naturally rich in iodine, and iodine content in seaweed varies enormously with where and when it was harvested.

Our supplement facts panel does not state an iodine figure, so we do not make an iodine claim — we would rather say that than print a number we cannot stand behind. It is also why this matters: if you have a thyroid condition or take thyroid medication, talk to your doctor before taking sea moss in any format. That applies to gel exactly as much as capsules.

So which should you buy?

Buy gel if you want the cheapest option, cook with it, and will genuinely keep up with the fridge cycle. Buy capsules if you want a fixed daily dose, no taste, no spoilage, and something that survives travel. Most people who start with gel and stop within a month were never going to lose to the ingredient — they lost to the logistics.

FAQ

Are sea moss capsules as good as gel?

They contain the same algae in concentrated form. Capsules give a fixed dose and no spoilage; gel gives you a raw whole food you can also cook with. Neither is stronger by nature — compare the milligrams stated on the label.

How long does sea moss gel last?

Roughly two to four weeks refrigerated. It has no preservatives and a high water content, so treat it like fresh food.

How many sea moss capsules should I take a day?

Follow the label. Ours is two capsules daily, taken 20–30 minutes before a meal.

Does sea moss have too much iodine?

Iodine content varies by harvest and is often unstated. If you have any thyroid condition or take thyroid medication, check with your doctor before using sea moss in any form.

Can you take sea moss every day?

It is designed as a daily supplement. Do not exceed the dose on the label — more is not better with mineral-dense seaweed.

Adults only. Not for use if pregnant or nursing. Consult your doctor before use if you have a thyroid condition or take thyroid medication.
