How Much Caffeine Is in Pre-Workout? A Sensible Guide to Dosing

Most commercial pre-workouts contain 250–350 mg of caffeine per scoop. For scale, a strong home-brewed coffee is roughly 150–200 mg. A single scoop is often two coffees in one go, taken quickly, on an empty stomach.

That is not automatically a problem. It becomes one when nobody tells you the number.

Putting the doses in context

Source Typical caffeine
Espresso shot ~65 mg
Mug of filter coffee ~150–200 mg
Energy drink ~80–160 mg
Typical pre-workout scoop 250–350 mg
NutriMagic Pre-Workout scoop 175 mg

The FDA cites 400 mg a day as an amount not generally associated with negative effects in healthy adults. Two scoops of a strong pre-workout can put you past that before you count the morning coffee.

Working out your real daily total

Count everything: pre-workout, coffee, tea, energy drinks, cola, some fat-burners. This is where people get caught — the pre-workout is not the problem, the pre-workout plus two coffees is.

Practical rule: if you are training in the afternoon, skip the coffee beforehand rather than stacking them.

Why timing matters more than you think

Caffeine's half-life is around five to six hours — so half of a 4pm dose is still circulating at 10pm. Even people who fall asleep fine on caffeine tend to sleep worse, and sleep is where training adaptations actually happen.

Do not take pre-workout within six hours of bed. If your only training window is late evening, use a stimulant-free option or accept the trade.

Is a lower-caffeine pre-workout weaker?

No — it just means the product is not relying on caffeine to feel like it is working. A pre-workout has two kinds of ingredients:

  • Fast: caffeine, arginine, citrulline — you feel these within the hour
  • Slow: creatine and beta-alanine — these work over weeks, by accumulation

A product loaded with caffeine and light on everything else feels strong and does less. Judge by the full panel.

What ours contains, and why

Our Pre-Workout Formula runs 175 mg of caffeine per scoop — roughly one strong coffee, deliberately moderate. If you have found other pre-workouts too harsh, that is the difference.

Per 10 g scoop: 1,500 mg dicreatine malate, 1,500 mg L-arginine alpha-ketoglutarate, 750 mg beta-alanine, 175 mg caffeine, and a 550 mg energy and endurance matrix (taurine, betaine, citrulline malate, tyrosine and others), plus electrolytes and a B-vitamin panel. Thirty servings, fruit punch, made in FDA-registered, cGMP facilities in the USA.

One scoop in 6–8 oz of cold water, 30 minutes before training. Two scoops is 350 mg of caffeine — most people should stay at one, and nobody should exceed two daily.

The tingling is beta-alanine

That prickling in your face, neck and hands 15–20 minutes in is paraesthesia, caused by beta-alanine. It is harmless, expected, and passes within the hour. It is not an allergic reaction, and splitting the scoop reduces it.

Check before you stack creatine

Ours already contains 1,500 mg of creatine per scoop. If you also take a standalone creatine — like our Creatine + Hydration Powder at 5,000 mg — read both labels so you know your true daily total. Not dangerous, just worth knowing. What the first fortnight of creatine looks like is covered in does creatine make you retain water.

FAQ

How much caffeine is in a typical pre-workout?

Most run 250–350 mg per scoop. Ours is 175 mg, roughly one strong coffee.

Is 175mg of caffeine enough for a pre-workout?

Yes for most people. Higher doses feel stronger but do not necessarily train better, and they crowd your daily limit.

Can I drink coffee and take pre-workout?

You can, but count the total. The FDA cites 400 mg daily as not generally associated with negative effects in healthy adults.

Why does pre-workout make me tingle?

Beta-alanine causes paraesthesia — a harmless prickling that starts 15–20 minutes in and passes within the hour. Splitting the dose reduces it.

How late can I take pre-workout?

Not within six hours of bed. Caffeine has a half-life of about five to six hours and sleep is where training adaptations happen.

Contains 175 mg caffeine per scoop. Not suitable if you are sensitive to caffeine or take medication for blood pressure or your heart. Adults 18+. Not for use if pregnant or nursing.
